According to a couple of YouTube videos I've watched, you don't have to remove those (although it would make access easier). It can be accessed from the front after removing the acoustic cover and a support bracket or two. I need to change my belt and tensioner anyway so I'm going to make an attempt of it this afternoon using this method and report back.

my story
I'll throw in my story.. I was at a red light in my 2017 330i, and then steam started coming out from my hood. No warning lights came on. I was about a mile from my house, so I continued driving home. As I neared my garage, I heard my turbo or engine started revving higher on its own, so I quickly pulled into my driveway and stopped the engine. Maybe 30 min later, I started the car, and the low coolant light came on. Put in coolant, drove around the block, and the low coolant light came on again, so I knew it was leaking. Got towed to the dealer the next day, and the service advisor said it could be the coolant vent line recall (SIB 17 01 21). The dealer was backed up, so the next day the technician sent me the diagnostic report, and indeed that was the problem. There was no charge for the fix since it's a recall. FYI, my car only has 30k miles.

Here’s a basic how to. You don’t have to remove the intake manifold.
You do need to remove: Plastic beauty covers Charge pipe Throttle body bracket (details ahead) You don’t have to completely remove the foam acoustic cover at the front of the engine as this involves disconnecting a large coolant line, but you do need to move it out of the way so you can get to the top of the alternator. Bracket still in place, now you’re looking at this: Note - I removed the foam, but that’s only because I replaced my belt, too. It’s not necessary for the coolant line. Next, unbolt this black bracket: And set it aside. In the space behind that bracket is the cylinder head side of that line, right at the front: My pick is resting on it. You can see the bolt holes from the bracket just removed right next to my pick, that’s how close it is to the front. Very easy. You’ll need a pick to disconnect the hose clip, and then use a large flathead screwdriver to push the line off the manifold (bad photo): And then, of course, disconnect the line from the expansion tank. Both ends of mine just completely fell apart while removing the line with little force. It wouldn’t have lasted much longer. The offending part number: Installation. As daunting as it may seem with the intake in the way, it’s not that bad. Work the line underneath the manifold and towards the front of the engine. It naturally wants to go in that direction, anyway. Snake it around enough and you’ll see the end of it moving around in the access hole created from removing the alternator bracket. You’ll be able to grab it with a pick and guide it on to the manifold connector at this point: Using the pick and pushing the other end of the line, guide it fully onto the connector. It slides on quite easily. After that, connect to the expansion tank, snap the connectors in place, and you’re done! This is also a great time to flush your radiator or replace your serpentine belt, if either service is needed. It’s also advisable to replace the throttle body gasket after removing the charge pipe. Hope this helps someone. Last edited by auburnf30x; 04-22-2022 at 11:39 PM.. |

I contacted my BMW dealer about this for my son's F36 420i, built mid-2018.
I quoted the service action ID number, etc, and got the response that following a check on the BMW database for the car's chassis number, there were 'no outstanding actions on the car.' Either the car had an upgraded part fitted on the assembly line, or it's been swapped at one of the previous two services free of charge. There's no mention on the service invoices, and nothing was mentioned about it at the end-of-warranty check either. |

I just finished replacing my expansion tank line. It was a lot easier than I thought. I did not even need to take off the charge pipe, I was able to access all the bolts for the black bracket once I take the cover and felt off. Afterwards it was easy to release the line at the engine side, the tank side took a little more force. The bad news is my car already have the updated part on it. Back to the drawing board to find my leak.

I managed to replace this with just removing the ECU harness and holding tray. (I needed the extra room for my hand, and it helped to properly route the line) If you look at the front of the engine, you can see past the (fiber board) engine cover to the cylinder head bung. Its going to be under the coolant return line for the low-temp system. (intake charge coolant lines) You can us a long, but slender pick tool to pull up on the clip that holds the plastic fitting to the cylinder head bung. Then you just need to get your hands back there to pull off the hose fitting. It took a little finagling but eventually I got it off.

I mentioned checking the coolant level, twice. Hopefully when others see that they will walk outside and check the coolant level. I'd hate for people to cook their engines.

Phoned the dealer this morning to book my 2017 330i B46 for a brake fluid service (49,800 KM/31,125 Miles) and the advisor mentioned the cylinder head ventilation line. After reading about the sudden coolant loss glad this will be addressed.

Look like currently only North America cars getting the hose replaced by dealers under the service bulletin. I wonder does this applies to my UK 430i as well. All my dealer said is no outstanding recall on my car.

When I check the official BMW website, I have no recall on my car. However; when I check the unofficial recall tool I do have 0017150200 as an open item for my car. It is likely not an official safety recall. I already replaced my line but may call the dealer anyway to see if their procedure include a flush of the coolant.

Edit: Forgot to mention: don't be me. I scheduled the appointment with a dealer two weeks out and then was told when I arrived that day "oh, we don't have that part". Since it was the dealership that sent the original text for the "recall", I was pretty annoyed -- though I didn't take it out on the service rep. Not his fault. So when you call, make sure they confirm they have the part. Last edited by GeorgeF31; 05-06-2022 at 01:20 PM.. |

So they call the vent tube replacement as a technical enhancement. This is what I get from the bmwgroup site.
"There is an open technical enhancement on this vehicle. Please go here to book an online appointment for your vehicle selecting "service as required" or contact your local retailer here for more information. Enhancement code 0017150200." |

I scheduled my appointment online with the description of the service update and my vin#. Also confirmed they had the part before dropping it off. I think the whole thing took around 3 hours from when I dropped it off.
