Quick service on the F31 this morning - full Liqui Moly engine flush; drained; refilled with Liqui Moly Molygen 5W40 and Mahle filter, and new Mahle air filter. Engine bay cleaned down as well; as you were...

As I now have a towbar and will be using it several times each year I'll need to install a reversing camera.

The aftermarket MMI box is compatible with a retrofit camera, but I remember t being such a fiddly pig of a job (even being able to reach into the touring boot to release the retaining clips for the boot switch moulding) that I gave up.

For those that have DIY'd a reversing camera for the F31, what's the best way to do this ?

I got in touch with a local place but it operates out of dodgy looking industrial estate and was told "there's no waiting area but you can leave the car". No chance.

I think it’s time for a new battery for mine. Definitely still on the original battery from BMW.

Start up from sitting for a week or so isn’t as instantaneous as I’d like but still quite fast.

For £140 with a code, I think it’s a bargain. I wanted a Yuasa but doesn’t have a code

That'll do the job nicely. Personally I'd go with Bosch as their warranty is solid; I've had issues with Yuasa before (albeit via Halfrauds) and it was a ball-ache to get it sorted

Are Mahle filters better than K&N (looking for an upgrade without going full intake right now.)

Mahle, like Mann and Hengst are OE - but they are standard air filters

No need for a K&N; doesn't make a jot of difference. Stick with a standard filter and put the money saved into a tank of VPower

I presume the tube fits down the dip stick tube. Although those tubes don't look long enough?

Cheers

It's brilliant; works superbly and makes the job a doddle

And the tubes slot into each other, so you make one long tube out of them - 2 of them is enough for the F31 - so the 2nd smallest goes down the dipstick; that sticks into the largest tube and that feeds into the tank

Apologies, missed that bit

Mines a good few years old now; so Amazon don't have it listed. But they're all very much the same to be fair

9L oil extractor with 4 pipes etc

If you've not got one already; get a decent oil container too. This Draper is the one I have; had it since 2018 and never had any issues

Finally got around to the gearbox service. Got out about 4.6L and put back in around 5.4L out of the 7L in the kit.

Will do a top up next week if it doesn’t drip out after going through the gears.

Looked like there was some metal shavings as well 😬

Washed the F31 again - only issue with the wife using it as the main commuter car, this time of year; are the huge bugs she hits on the M65, even worse when its warm as they splatter and then set

Soaked liberally with BH Auto-Foam and they've rinsed off nicely; bar the windscreen, which I've used an old clay mitt - done the job superbly

It's not unless you care about how much Ethanol is in your fuel, Momentum is the best pump fuel for a tuned car but there's not a lot in it so keep collecting the points, that's what I do and I have multi maps in case I can't get that or shell. There's a guy on YouTube called Boiler house garage who tests fuel and here's the results. This is backed up by Officially Gassed testing fuel, Tesco made the most power but only beat shell by a fraction, like 1bhp but it had less knock, probably helped by all that Ethanol. You can get loyalty points on shell too, not sure if there as useful as Tesco though.

Always a hard time selling a car that's been (no doubt) a good one.

I hope you got what you wanted for it at least?

Yeah, had it for 8 years! Not a bad price [motorway], obviously could have sold for a bit more privately but it was an easy process. Going to be a difficult car search over the summer but looking like a Golf R or slightly older RS3. Unfortunately M5s, RS4s and 550i models are holding a very strong value this year

For the sake of £10 and my peace of mind, I’ll be replacing the PCV diaphragm which is a very well known failure point on the B58 engines.

Also got my new battery ready to be put in after charging it for a bit. I didn’t realise how f***ing heavy these are! Very different from the Yaris battery I had before

Haha yeah; they're big lumps those batteries

The F31 was a sod to fit; I could not get my slab-like hands down the side of the battery to undo the lower clamp; had to faff with long nose pliers and an extendable magnetic wand

I'd dropped the bottom piece, so it was a faff
