Happened to me, i kept it from coming on for about a month but I really just was hoping JB4 could hold it off. it's whatever. thanks a lot it was quite insightful! i still was wondering if Big Boost Turbos Stage 2 or Stage 3 turbo is a worthwhile upgrade but it's gonna be a while before i ever start in those kinds of mods

Just bumping this thread up again, as I'd like to hear from anyone who has done a big turbo upgrade on the b48.

I'm building a Mini Cooper S track car, motor being used is the later model B48 with 10.2:1 compression (20 and 25i from memory).

I've done a lot of research on Pure Turbos, Big Boost and others and its virtually impossible to find anyone with a proper experience with these.

I've found Big Boost really unhelpful when it comes to info, no conformation of sizes, physical differences to stock (which are essential if I am going to fit one in a Mini). The fact they supply so much with their kit is a bonus though.

Personally i haven't heard of anyone running it really, i know they were developed but everytime I try to look for examples, or uses I haven't come across anyone actively running these kits sadly.

Bumping this thread as my 2018 430i with a JB4 w/ intake and DP is running a stage 2 tune. But its coming out of warranty and looking to upgrade the turbo. Has anyone started to play around with the B46/B48 turbo upgrades yet?

Yep, I have a "hybrid turbo" installed, just completed the job a week ago.
https://jmtcperformance.com/super-s-...er-2-l-engine/

It is bigger on both sides, but the intake side seems to be where the biggest gains are.
Car is a Mini Cooper S, running the second gen B48 - same as the 30i BMW's I believe (10.2:1 compression).

I have a "before dyno" figure, car is stage 2, running DP and large front mount intercooler, larger intake with 21 psi boost on 98 fuel. Our dynos in Australia read far lower than in the US (so pointless discussing the figure), but its the percentage increase which will be of interest.

I'm trying to install BM3, but having a massive pain of a time, waiting on more tech support from PTF. VIN is being picked up by the agent but for whatever reason BM3 won't link my VIN to my account.

The car was due to go on the dyno this Friday, but unless I get it going tomorrow evening that will be delayed.

Car will be running on E85 with the larger turbo, I am hoping to achieve a 25% increase from the larger turbo and E85 combo. Fingers crossed

definitely keep us updated on what the gains are, considering the pureturbo stage 2 on my b48.

bumping this thread. ive got a B48 with intake, chargepipe, and dowpipe. Running a JB4 on stage II with 91octane (all thats available in my area). It definitely gave me a nice jump on the butt dyno, but I'm also looking to be that unicorn and want to upgrade the stock turbo. I want to avoid the fuel upgrades and not put the internals to the limit and hopefully get to that 350whp range. From all things I've read so far, thats about what you should expect out of these motors without having to go fuel/internals.

Has anyone upgraded their turbo yet, and what kind of tune or mapping did you use?

I did turbo upgraded, built motor, ect.
Will share details on turbo when I am finished testing with all details.
For tune I use bm3 platform.

I will have to wait patiently I guess then. Using BM3 im guessing for the tune? Im just going to assume the JB4 with its stock maps aren't going to cut it once you upgrade the turbo.

I should be on the dyno tomorrow to finalize pump gas map and next week for a race gas map.
Once this is done I'll finish up the videos and post them.
Sorry, for the wait very busy these days and not enough time to make all the videos.

Yes bm3 for the tune, I am do not think JB4 will be able to adjust turbine maps for the new turbo.

Did a nice 100-200 the other day on my Taiwanese hybrid, BM3 custom tune, XHP, and e30 fuel, actually I think I could get very close to 9s maybe even into the 8's, as I was not using full RPM, just in S+ mode that has the stock 6500 redline, I can only get the full 7000 RPM in M mode with XHP

FYI I am running stock exhaust, just air filter upgrade.

I did the 60-120km in M mode using full 7000rpm, and also a very good time for a little 2L

15 deg timing, 26-27 psi, with 18 deg outside ambient temp

I "think" that the stock bottom end can handle more if you keep the boost up high in RPM, I might try for a 30 psi glory run on e50 with set of new cup2 tires if I get the courage.

So I did some initial testing shocking results, still testing phases and not final, but will start working on videos.
1st Video will be out next week and will try to release a new one every week which should give me enough time to finish dyno testing ect.

The Pure turbo upgrade for the B48 claims wheel power in the 400s. The first B48 consumer cars coming out of warranty now are being tested. I haven't found someone ready to do it yet. I don't doubt Pure's turbo, I doubt the tuning. Plenty of places run their mouth and the marketing machine works here, then when pressed for details in writing they "will get back to me by the end of day" and fade into the sunset.

Big Boost has another claimed B48 upgrade teased with upgraded engine internals alongside their turbo. Nothing public or consumer reviewed.

Unless you're in a unicorn area we're in uncharted areas for the B48.
So 400 crank is realistically possible with forged pistons, connecting rods, and camshafts? Plus ofc the stage 2 tune, DP, etc etc?

Also will CP Carillo's forged pistons for the B48 fit in seamlessly into the B46? They're pretty much the same engine with just the SULEV thing right?

This whole thread is outdated information. I wouldn't take up on it.

400whp-450whp on a stock engine B46/B48 is possible with the right turbo, fueling, and tuning. These are the same engines as the B58 just 2 less cylinders. Do the math on what the B48 is capable. Its proportional.

Check out the IM450 hybrid turbo upgrade.

Lol really? I'm just trying to get to 400-450 whp at most, nothing more than that for sure. Somewhere around there and I'd be a happy man to be fair.

ipos motorsport makes a turbo for this power level. Navardi Tuned is the tuner to use. x-ph doesnt sell this (edit he does but doesnt like to mention it. x-ph link https://x-ph.com/ipos-motorsport-im4...turbo-upgrade/). dont let them tell you that the pure stage 2 makes more power or the crappiest big boost turbo kit (just look at an install video from shah machine shop for quality assurance issues). im450 is what you want to buy.
