Brake Upgrade

Hello all f30 members. I just traded in my e90 and got a 2015 328i xDrive with the m sport pack. My brake pads and rotors are due for service soon. I am looking to do an oem plus upgrade. I was thinking about getting the m performance brake kit but then I realized that the m3 brakes might fit. I will be tracking my car for fun so either would be a huge upgrade. If I were to go for m3 would it be that much more money? I know that the m performance would definitely be enough but just want a second opinion from fellow members.

M3 brakes and M perf brakes are essentially identical..

Here is what you want. I have the same exact kit on my car, rear rotors sold separately. The brakes also come in Red, and Orange, This is a factory option. The car will need to be coded for the new brakes, as the front and rear calipers will be bigger.

You mentioned in your first post that you wanted to do an oem plus upgrade, and while I have no idea what that is, you could also do an m sport brake upgrade with blue calipers (you can have them redone any color) and 340/345 front/rear rotors. Cheaper than m perf and only slightly different.

I am about to install the m-sport brakes. Is it only the m-performance brakes that needs coding? Because the guy I bought mine from insisted that I did not need to code them.

VO code 2NH, though some say you can get away without coding

Thank you for the info. Do you know if it's possible with Bimmercode in expert mode? Or do I need a computer with Esys.

And sorry for hijacking the thread!

VO coding requires E-sys, can't be done with bimmercode

Take a picture of your front calipers from now. If you have the grey 4 pot Brembos you have the factory 340mm front rotors. You WONT get the car fast or hot enough to overcook those brakes with proper pads + vented rotors. The M3/m4 calipers would be for show.

Lots of threads on this around if you look in the suspension/brakes section 😀

Most folks here do brake upgrades for exactly that: for show

They said for track. If you track the car hard enough the colored calipers turn green slowly transitioning into a burnt orange.

M3/4 calipers == M performance Calipers == M sport 370mm calipers.

With proper pads and fluid the 340mm are just as capable.

Whether a brake caliper upgrade requires coding is dependent on which calipers your car had originally. If you had front Brembo 340mm brakes whether they were blue or grey, then your car does not need coding because it already has the correct code from the factory.

But if you are upgrading from either of the front single piston calipers (312mm or 330mm fronts) to either of the Brembo front calipers, then your car will need to be coded for the higher front/rear brake bias.

BMW causes a lot of confusion with their M Performance and M Sport marketing terms.

M3/M4 brakes use the exact same front Brembo 4-piston calipers but the mounting points on the M cars are different so they mount over 380mm x 30mm rotors. While the F3x cars must use 370mm x 30mm front rotors.

Both use the same rear Brembo 2-piston calipers over 345mm x 24mm rotors.

On the F3x, M Performance and M Sport brakes use the exact same front 370/rear 345 calipers. On MP they come in red, orange or yellow. On MS, they come in blue.

But there is another caveat. On lower end models like the 328i, its M Sport Brakes use a front 4-piston Brembo that only fits over a 340mm x 30mm rotor, along with the Brembo 2-piston 345mm brakes. They are painted blue.

So you will find two blue front Brembo calipers that appear identical but they are not. The larger one has a stretched casting. The back of one in raised lettering says "340" and the other says "370/380".

Often guys will try to get a higher price for M3 brakes or for M Performance brakes. They are literally all the same as long as the back of the front caliper says "370/380" and the rear says "345". Typically fronts cost $450-$600 depending on condition and rears cost $350-$500 depending on condition.

On the street you won't notice a difference between F370/R345 and F340/R345 caliper sets. But on a track with repeated high speed braking the front 370mm rotors have greater mass so they are less prone to brake fade than the 340mm front rotors.

Pads are the most important component. On the street, Hawk 5.0 pads have superior bite, instant warm up and light dust that washes right off.

Change your rubber brake hoses to stainless steel brake lines for more solid brake pedal feel.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for clarifying that little lot. I struggle with some of this stuff being new to the brand. "M Sport" - "M Performance" How ridiculous.

The M Sport/Performance brakes look great, they can be worth buying solely for that reason.

However, I'll dissent on the need to upgrade brakes for the track if you're a beginner or intermediate track driver. The M Sport/Performance brakes will handle heat better for the stated reasons, but that is counter intuitive for driver education since it can mask inefficient or excessive braking. The stock brakes will be much more communicative in that regard. Essentially, the stock brakes will more readily tell you if you're working them too hard.

For the track, replace the rotors and pads if needed - OEM rotors and pads are perfectly fine for the track - and add high-temp fluid.

Hence the 370mm indication next to msport

Also the F8x use the 2piston brembo rears over 370mm rotors, not 345 like the F3x.

Incorrect, they use the same 345mm rear rotors as the F3x.
