Seems like BMW just stopped installing the part even though the Light Package is standard now.

In the VIN Decode, at the bottom under standard features you can see option 563 Lights Package is installed. And as mentioned previously I do have the 2 color ambient lights (orange and white) in the rest of the cabin, on the doors, on the overhead control panel for the sunroof, and the back passenger area, however the one missing is just the cup holder LED which is obviously the critical part for this mod.

Here is my VIN decode : http://pastebin.com/bNrzW91C

Any help those of you do have the LED can provide in determining which cable is needed, and where it comes from would be greatly appreciated by all 2016 4 series owners I already know the LED part number (63319242162)

Thanks again!

That is really strange, but probably due to the 2016 mixture of F30 LCI parts with non-LCI 4 series cars.
Although, from what I know, LCI F30 still have the LED over the cupholders. But not 100% sure.
I'm doing another LCI trim swap on sunday, so I'll pay attention where the LED wires lead. But probably hard to determine without removing the headunit, which I'm not going to touch.

What Dante said.

I actually bought the chrome trim before discovering this mod and it's sitting in my garage - unused... The LCI looks much nicer.

Interested in this mod myself.

I've got one query though...

Is this how the leds are wired on the LCI from factory? I'd be worried I'm hijacking a power feed designed to supply current to a single led and then drawing current from a shed load of leds off it to the fascia...?

I don't know how the LEDs in the LCI trim piece are fed from factory. But afaik it has to be the same module as for the existing ambient lighting in the cabin.
The trim piece is illuminated by 4 LEDs, 2 white and amber LEDs left and right.
Of course only 1 on each side light up at the same time, depending on the light color chosen.
That means 2 more LEDs have to be fed by the module. As LEDs draw very litte current, I decided for myself to take the risk.

Of course everybody interested in the mod has to decide for themselves!

@Chew
As I suspected, I wasn't able to determine where the LED wire comes from.
It comes out under the Headunit. I think you should be able to see after removing the Headunit. How its done is shown in the video on Page 1 of this thread.

Unfortunately, it would appear that they have completely omitted the required lead for the cup holder LED on the 2016 4 series vehicles.

I just got done tearing apart the head unit and after peering all around the internals of the dash and feeling underneath the cup holders I can't find the required lead in order to power the LCI bezel.

Unless we can find someone that can trace the lead to where it goes it seems us 2016 4 series owners are unable to perform this particular DIY.

Hopefully we have someone bold enough to take out the head unit in order for us to get some insight as to where this thing belongs.

Also as a side note, I noticed that I did not have an antenna connected to the WLAN port on my head unit, and my Connected Drive and Office features of iDrive are not working today. I'm waiting on my encore appointment to figure out what's going on with that and I'll update once I have more info.

Thanks again for all your help Dante, just wish I had better news for us 2016 4 series owners.

check out my post #106

paying for 2 rounds of shipping (germany to the states, and then their us office to me, which was priority at a label cost of about $17) so their upcharge wasn't terribly unreasonable.

They're impossible to see with a black interior. You might wanna check the brightness is all the way up in your iDrive settings tho. Also that the knob on the light switch is up. Theres a coding option to separate the ambient lighting from that knob and make it only iDrive which I find to be a good thing to do.

yeah its all the way up, that was the first thing I started looking at once I discover them, I also read somewhere here that they can be coded to be brighter, supposedly its only at 60% from factory....then again I also read that people who coded this saw no difference whatsoever...I guess I should be glad that at least they are there...

Nah coding can't make them brighter, never works. I wish.

That is really curious and might be a U.S. spec detail.
What exact built date is yours? (VIN check)

Before your post I thought I've gotten to the bottom of the following problem:

Because I wanted to know how the illuminated LCI Trim piece is fed on the LCI cars, I went to the dealer and took a peek under the cover of a german spec LCI F31 with light package and small Business Nav.
I found that the LCI models do have the holder and hole for the Cupholder LED, but just as Chew discovered on his model 2016 F36 the actual LED is missing. The Trim piece LEDs are fed from the wire which feeds the cupholder LED on pre LCI models.
So my theory was, that on all 2016 F3x based models the Cupholder LED is spared.

But @explorer2 above findings would hint to a earlier omission of the cupholder LED.

Here are two pics of the LCI model with illuminated trim (top) and my pre LCI model with cupholder LED and retrofit LCI trim via my Y-Adapter (bottom)

Does that mean that people with an LCI car can buy the pre LCI part for the cup holder and retrofit it?

Dayum that's steep - in USD, my local dealer quoted me $80 CDN - ~$60 USD. Not currently in stock in Germany though according to their computer though I can order it.
