Was going forward and secure against rolling put my car in park

I have an F36 2015 gran coupe and I was going forward maybe about 5mph and I opened my door to greet my dog and the car slammed into P. I heard a weird noise, like maybe plastic gears grinding. Transmission seems to be fine drives and parks great. Does anyone know if this will cause damage down the road I kinda hate bmw for adding that feature.

Virtually every new car does this. The doors should be closed when the car is moving.
I won’t even ask why you were allowing your dog to approach a moving car.

I learned about this the other day as well.. Pulling into my garage after I had done some mechanical work to my winter beater, tried pulling forward with my door open so I could gauge how much room I had to get out afterwards (narrow garage). Moved forward a couple inches and thought I plowed into something when the car went into park.

My new trucks never did this to me haha.

I assure you the gears are not plastic.

If you put your seatbelt on it will not shift to park on its own with the door open.

Correct. If you have your seatbelt buckled the car is fairly certain that you're not going to exit the car, so it will let you open the door while moving. If you don't then not knowing if you're too stupid to put the car in park before getting out it assumes the worst and puts it in park, just in case.

Yeah I know they aren't, I was just describing the sound. I'm just worried about it causing damage later down the road this is my first Beamer so I didn't know it did that

You're fine. I'm fairly certain this can be coded out as well.

I'd love to code this out - sometimes I'll need to quickly move the car a little in our driveway and buckling / closing door is not needed in those particular scenarios only.

We live in a highly litigious society..........coding out may prove interesting.

If Anton Yelchin's Jeep had this feature it wouldn't have killed him. I back into my very narrow circa 1938 garage, and I have to open my door to be sure that I've got it lined up with the foam rubber padding I glued to the concrete block garage wall that marks the right spot to park. If I pull the car into the driveway to work on it and then back it into the garage again I have to buckle my seat belt for that 20 foot trip. As with most First World Problems I manage to deal with it.

What are the odds of the car rolling with a 6MT? Do you naturally pay more attention when parking?

A lot less than the odds of a 6MT shifting itself into Park.

I think if you start the car with the door already open, that’ll also allow you to move it with the door open without the seatbelt on.

I wonder why BMW doesn’t slam the brakes in addition to activating park? Seems like the brakes would be way more effective. I assume with ABS and e-Diff and all that other stuff, the car can fully activate the brakes on its own.

This is another stupid nanny option that some manufacturers have added. I found it a couple weeks ago when I drove down a road that just ended. There was no cul-de-sac, so I needed to back into a grassy driveway opening to turn around. Only problem is, I couldn't see. The back up camera washed out because my car is white, so it was useless. I opened the door so I could back up without going into the drainage ditch, but the car wouldn't let me move. I got very irritated with the car at this point.

I hate all of the nanny controls on these cars. Are drivers really this incompetent today that we're not allowed to make decisions ourselves?

Sorry for the thread highjack...

Cut a small piece of black electrical tape to cover the lower portion of the camera lens such that the white bumper is obscured, and the camera will no longer adjust the contrast/exposure because of the bright white bumper.

By doing so, your camera’s night vision will improve markedly.

When one of those decisions is not buckling your seat belt it's no longer mere incompetence, it's sheer stupidity.

Sadly, to Yelchin's detriment, Chrysler products are not First World. And that was his problem.

After that night, I did just that. I can now see when I back up, but it did no good that night.

And to the comment about the seat belt, I had to disconnect my seat belt after opening the door to lean out the door far enough to see what was behind me, so comments like that aren't needed. Also, if you've ever been in a bad car accident and you were trapped because of the seat belt, you might not like the idea of wearing one. There are pros and cons to wearing one, just like there are pros and cons to airbags, run flat tires, auto locks and every other security feature.

Based on what I see around here, the answer is yes.

What??? You can’t think for yourself? Wearing a seatbelt is a choice. It doesn’t mean you are stupid.
