This goes for NA engines, turbo or supercharged.

The MPG benefit to turbo/supercharging is that you can have a smaller displacement engine that can produce larger displacement power.
So if you drive with lighter throttle applications you get the benefit of a smaller displacement engine with plenty of power to move you in normal traffic situations.
Then, when you want more power you can have it with larger throttle applications and the turbo/supercharged engine will effectively put out as if it were a larger engine.
That is when MPG goes down, simply because you are calling on the engine to produce more power, and to produce more power it will suck in more air, pressurize it to effectively pack air in as if it were a larger engine, and that additional air will need more fuel to produce the power you want.

Any tune should let you get the same MPG as before the tune, if and when you drive it with lighter throttle applications.
If you typically use around 150hp/150lb ft to accelerate under normal driving, then you will use a certain amount of fuel. So even if you have a tune to give your engine a higher potential power output, that doesn't mean that you will be using more power under the same normal driving conditions.
Only when you want to use the greater power will you use more fuel.
It's all under your control.

In some engines a tune has shown a slight increase in MPG when driving normally compared to stock, but that isn't always the case.
BMW says that average MPG remains the same with the PPK, and it will as long as you don't call on the greater power now available. If you do, then average MPG will be lower, no getting around that.

Typically though when a driver gets a higher power tune they want to experience it and enjoy it. That's why average MPG tends to drop once a tune gets installed. It's simply because the driver is getting into the throttle more and more often to enjoy the added power, not because the tune hurts average MPG during normal driving.
Once the newness of the tune fades the cars average MPG goes up as the driver settles in and doesn't use the added power most or all of the time.
When the driver returns to normal/typical throttle use the average MPG goes back up.

Your best MPG control is your throttle foot. Using it better with more precision will give you best average MPG, tune or stock.
Adding a few PSI to your tires if you do more highway miles can also help.
Thanks. I agree with your logic. Appreciate you taking the time to lay it out.

The turbo 6 will go in the ATS V which competes with the M3/M4.
Yeah, I'm surprised Caddy got that weight down to below 4k lbs. But, yeah, I see what you're saying. The ATS-V should be interesting - that engine might be slightly detuned from the CTS Vsport edition (for ATS-V).

I have been looking out for this test since it kind of gives us an insight into the ATS-V. This has to be good news for BMW. The M3 with DCT weighs 3600 lbs, about 300lbs less than this CTS Vsport and also has 120 less tq and makes power/tq further in the rev range. However it still beats this CTS Vsport. I think if you put this same engine in the ATS V you will end up about 0.1 to 0.2s ahead of the E92 M3, which may not be good enough to beat the F82 M4

If you go back a couple of pages there's a couple of people saying a new DME was put into production 07/2013 (MEVD176G), and subsequent cars (MY13 and 14), use this new DME.

That seems plausible to me.

So what we're waiting to hear -- those of us with a car produced prior to 7/13 -- is this:
1) Do we get new DME if we buy MPPK?
or
2) Do we just live with old version of MPPK?

Obviously 1 is preferable to 2.

And if you happen to have bought an MPPK before the new DME, you'r probably wondering if BMW will do the right thing and upgrade your DME and PPK free.
Still trying to figure this out myself. I have a May 13 build, but want the updated tune if possible. I called BMW North America to get an answer and that was not helpful. The service representative knew less than I did about the issue, and after several attempts he finally was able to restate my question. He then he put me hold, only to return saying he didn't know, but he thinks I will limited to the kit specific to my build date.

Some have suggested that a software update changing the sport display to 400/400 indicates the addition of the updated tune for pre-July 13. The rep from BMWNA was completely clueless on this and I gave up trying to even explain the issue.

Assuming worst case scenario, that we are limited to 320hp (not 335), the question is then: Will I still get it, or will I feel that it is not worth it because I now know that there is something slightly better that I can't have? I think there has been some research on this type of decision making by Kahneman and Tversky.

All these dates for PPK availability is somewhat frustrating. Guess I really don't need the PPK. I'm too old anyway. Haha!

But it's odd that the BMW site shows the MPPK kist available for 3 built up to and including 7/2013.
The odd part is that July 2013 builds are 2014 models that supposedly have the new engine management software.
....

Seems the site should list the kit for up to June 2013 builds, which would be the last of the 2013 model year.
Confusing indeed.
Can't speak to the engine management software, but the South Africa plant has produced MY 2013 335 cars with July build dates to which you can still add VPC installed option Z4A (PPK).

Currently the BMW ordering system is not showing the Z4A option as available for model year 2014s.

Took delivery of mine last night. Was considered an Aug 1 build on paper, but door panel sticker indicates 7/2013. Mine was already produced waiting to ship from SA when my dealer was able to transfer from original ordering dealer. I added PPK to order mid-August and had no problem. It came through and even has an adjusted exhaust note. My boost gage reads 400 max - loving it

So was it listed on the sticker? My MPPK was removed a while ago, no word for the dealer when it will be available on 2014 model.

Mine was a July build.

I picked up my August-build 335 last week, and it had the MPPK on the sticker (along with MP Exhaust, front splitter, rear diffuser and black kidney grilles)

Wow, the PN is still not showing up at any of the local centers for me... That's really strange unless it is just taking some time to trickle from the VPC to the dealers...

Okay thanks for the info, nice ride.. Yes I am jealous. I need to find out why a Aug build gets MPPK, but not a July build. Makes no sense.

I ordered Performance exhaust, black grilles, rear diffusor, pedals, and MPPK (which was deleted). I will be adding a deck lid spoiler (EB2 painted) and possibly a frt splitter.. Although I'd have the upper section painted EB2, leave the lower part stock.

How long was it after it hit port before delivery? Mine hit port on 10/4.

All the M Performance stuff definitely added about a week to delivery time... mine arrived at the port on 9/12, and was delivered to my dealer (less than an hour's drive from the port) on 9/27.
Did you do Euro delivery? (Trying to figure out why a July build would just be arriving now... )

The front splitter looks great in person; really makes the car stand out. I thought about having it painted as you describe, but I actually really like it as is. Also, great choice on the rear diffuser! That is actually my favorite detail of the car... (I haven't seen a single other F30 with one)

Yes I did a Euro Delivery back in August. Had an absolute blast!

Dealer just called my this afternoon, says the car hasn't cleared into their system yet. So no way to press this MPPK issue yet. Might still be in customs or whatever? They sent another message through the system about the MPPK. Since the car already has 2400 miles on it (past break in period) would be nice to have the power and exhaust kit.

Initially my fear was the front splitter might give the car a bit of a ricer look to it. I have never seen one in person (just on this site).. Although the more I see front splitters the more I like them. The rear diffuser gives it an F1 look IMO. I have never seen one in person either. Just this site. I think frt splitters and diffusers look the best on white cars.

Did I mention this wait really sucks?

Why on earth would they option that car with M Performance brakes for over 3k when they could just add M Sport brakes for $650??

Euro Delivery is something every BMW snob (myself included) needs to do once in their lives.

I agree, perhaps M Performance might be a little more 'track ready' over the $650 option? Plus you get a choice of colors!! I opted for MSport brakes, blue caliper (IMO) looks cool matching the car.

VikH- Thanks for posting that. More evidence I can use to bitch out BMWNA for removing it from my order.
