EcoPro Vs Comfort/Sport MPG

Just thought I would share my nonscientific testing.

Wanted to see what the difference in MPG was between EcoPro and Comfort/Sport. I drove a full tank like a grandma in EcoPro and a full tank aggressively in Comfort/Sport.

Note: I drive about 50/50 city/highway

Here are my numbers:

EcoPro (Fuelly 27.7mpg)

Comfort/Sport (Fuelly 24.7mpg)

Avg price per gallon $4.00
Avg 12,500 miles per year

EcoPro Yearly Fuel Cost = (12,500/27.7)x$4 = $1805.05
Comfort/Sport Yearly Fuel Cost = (12,500/24.7)x$4 = $2024.29

Difference = $219.24

In conclusion saving $219.24 in a year isn't worth driving like a grandma in EcoPro. Rather drive it like it is supposed to be driven!

Wouldn't the bigger difference be between Comfort and Sport modes? I like the hair trigger throttle response in Sport, but that is what kills fuel economy.

Last weekend I drove up to Chapel Hill to see the Heels play. Round trip from Wilmington was 250 miles. I tried ECO mode for first time since stop/start drives me crazy. In ECO mode at 78 , my mileage was 33.2. I normally use Comfort mode and get 24 around town.

I have 1600 miles on a 328i.

So I got a 2013 335i RWD M-Sport, build in Munich, Euro delivery three months ago, car has 3k miles with PPK, drove in ECO mode for about 250 miles non stop, 70 to 80 miles per hour and I got 37mpg, AC was on all the time.

I'm happy :-)

Now when I'm pushing the car I even change my console to display the date instead :-)

Thank you for your review.

I just wish I could have the dynamics of Sport+ in Comfort mode and remove eco mode and sport mode There should be a "M" button on the steering wheel, Sport+ on or off like the M 3/5

i used eco pro exclusively for the first 10,000km... now its sports 80% of the time..

i used to frequently get 4.8-5.3 L/100km, now its more like 5.5-6.5

enjoy it i say

EP is good for start/stop traffic when you don't want a twitchy throttle IMO, I've noticed the "additional range" I get using it is around 10km a tank. Nice to have but I can understand some people may feel underwhelmed.

Because I run adaptive suspension, I tend to use Comfort when I have other people in the car, EP when I do the morning or evening commute to/from the CBD and Sport when I'm getting around on the weekend.

I really like the fact I can adjust the characteristics of the suspension on throttle mapping on the fly to suit the conditions and requirements, it's one of the things that really makes this car an absolute treat to drive IMO.

Grandma vs. Aggressive.... Note that your fuel consumption is over 10% more, for what? A difference of ONLY 0.3mph extra speed average, (27.2 to 27.5mph according to OBC).

Put in perspective, gives a good example how Eco-Pro can help save a significant amount of fuel.

i wonder what the difference would be if the driving habits were 80% highway or more. i think EcoPro would save more money and make more sense if it was mostly highway driving.

The only time I really use Eco mode is when I'm on the highway and when I'm in heavy traffic.

This doesn't make sense to me.

If you're on the highway you're probably already cruising in 8th gear, so it wouldnt matter if you're using Eco or Comfort.

To me it would seem city driving is where you'd see the most benefit as the tranmission upshifts as quickly as possible and throttle response is very muted.

How about driving like it's stolen in EcoPro mode.
Pedal to the metal all the time

I think it really depends on what environment you live in (urban vs. rural)

thanks for that experiment.

eco pro is going to be good for those long (4+ hour) trips where you cant really push it too much and you're just cruising.

Slightly better than 1% improvement in average speed for for a 12% drop in fuel consumption..... I think the eco pro is great when in traffic and find the encouragement to anticipate and go easy on the loud pedal is a great little toy to make dull journeys interesting as well as saving you money. Swapping into sport mode if you see a chance for some fun is hardly difficult.

Yes, great experiment. I wonder what the difference would be with "Sailing" in the 2014...

I can report similar results on a stock '13 335xi. Eco Pro mode on the highway at 77mph cruise, with AC = 37 mpg
