That one works well and smells good. All their stuff smells good and most of it sounds like stripper body products. Black magic, butter, etc.

Installed my Depo headlights. Pain in the ass, and they're not adjusted perfectly, but they look great compared to my halogens.

Big day today for the 430/Manual 6 spd. The wife foolishly left for a planned girl's weekend so I ordered up some goodies that all came last week. Also, the first 10k service came up Friday so I got that done knowing it'd be a year before it would be back at BMW.
First up was a JB4. I've had a JB+ (boost controller) on the car for several months and it's great add. The 4 Series in general and especially the B48 cars are just a bit too refined, polished and polite. (A stock 430 with an M Sport package and 19's is bordering on false advertising IMO.) Having the 6 speed definitely makes it possible to wind the car up and get aggressive, but it wasn't until I added the little JB doo-hickey that it actually pulled, if not all the way to red-line at least close enough to bring the nose up, push me back into the seat and make me feel like I'm about to get arrested. Can't beat it for $200 and a super easy plug and play install. I've been running mine at 100% boost for most of the year. No issues. Some complain that it's not as smooth as stock, and that may be more true on the AT cars, but I felt very little difference beyond more power coming on quicker. On Sport + (with adaptive suspension to firm up the handling) it's not what I called a "sports car" but it's definitely a riot to throw around. Not polite any more. The JB4 is a nice piece. Connections were easy, all plug and play, two connections. The same TMAP connection as the JB+ and one other up on the intake, plus an OBD cable that has to be routed through the firewall into the cabin. I added the BT connection module and the IOS App. I was very slow and deliberate so it took a solid hour to get it done. Clearly it's intended for AT cars because the nice open cavity with a rubber plug for access they'd like you to mount it in is filled completely with the clutch master cylinder on a manual car, and there's no rubber plug. Not only is there nowhere to tie the control unit down, there's no cabin access. I ended up going through the door jamb but it'll have to go to my audio guy to have that OBD cable properly run, and the unit mounted somewhere dry. With everything connected, at first start it was throwing PDC errors (?) but they cleared on the restart and stayed off. The BMS BT app is really good. Configurable gauges and displays, several progressively aggressive maps that can be changed on the fly, lots of potential for customization. And it actually links right up and works...are you listening, DINAN?. I had both a Dinantronic Sport and a Dinan Stage One on the car when I first got it (not at the same time). Neither could manage a successful BT session without freezing, and the Stage One was incredibly choppy, like the car was fighting the tune. With the BMS stuff, everything is copacetic. The JB4 was over $600 with the BT module, although I'll get a $200 credit if I return the JB+. The big question is, is the car a markedly better performer...any quicker or smoother? Marginally it probably is. But if the tune is going to be your only mod, no downpipe, no exhaust, no high octane gas, most of the JB4's potential will go untapped. I'd go with just the JB+ if you're certain you won't go any further. Then again I was sure until I wasn't. You have a year to make up your mind and trade up for full value though. Next up I wanted to address the exhaust note. The B48 is hands down the best sounding T4 I've had, but it's a bit too quiet, especially in the cabin. I picked up a DINAN FreeFlow exhaust, basically a new, smaller muffler and new twin tips that look like the OEM tips but slightly larger. You have to get the car in the air and use a Sawzall to cut the exhaust pipe on the car, then a collar to couple the DINAN to the pipe. It was an awkward space to work in and we had to go get a carbide tipped blade for the saw, so it took a couple hours, but it wasn't a complicated job. Sound is exactly what I was going for. Very bassy and loud at idle, big roar under throttle, especially with the JB4 on Map 2 and the car in Sport +. Just a bit louder than stock when not the engine isn't under heavy load So after this weekend I feel like the car's performance lives up to the promise the body work makes. It's quick enough and loud enough to get the adrenalin going, but it will also lay back and transform into a smooth, quiet cruiser. Verdict on the JB4 is still out. Not sure it's worth the extra time and money vs the JB+, yet. I still haven't really dug into it yet. A few pics from pick up day and the past year. It's gotten tint, Michelin Pilot Supersports on 19" M4 reps, Morel Hybrid 2 Ways x2 in the cabin, hardwired V1, Full OEM Carbon Fiber interior trim set, Burger JB4 and DINAN Freeflow exhaust. Now I guess I need to figure out what a "downpipe" and "meth injection" is. |
