too much brake dust?
I've been riding my 128i for a bit over 1000 km now and I
noticed that I'm getting a lot of brake dust. I mean sometimes I do brake hard but still... Am I supposed to expect a lot of brake dusts? Is everyone experiencing the same? |

All BMW get a ton of brake dust. Welcome to the club of cleaning your wheels every week.

Porterfield Carbon Kevlar R4-S are my preferred street/light track pads. And dust is reasonable.
I'd also recommend the R4 compound for a higher friction coefficient and racing duty. Right now I don't see the 135i size pads on their website, but these guys would be willing to work with anyone to get the right size pads info and they will bake a few sets in no time. All it takes is to call them with the info and they'll take care of it. (They're in Costa Mesa if any Socal member with a 135i wants to drop by their place to get things rolling) Also, from my experience with them some years back and the A32 Maxima, we should be able to set up with them an ongoing group buy price that anyone can get from them just by mentioning that you're a member. |

Hopefully they will come out with some lower dusting pads for the 1. I notice there are non on Tirerack's website yet. I have Hawk HPS on my E46 fronts and they are TONS better. I had some Axxis Deluxe and they hardly ever dusted, but they also didn't have much initial bite. The Hawk HPS feel as good as stock to me and are very low dusting.

I wish I had my 135i already, I'd pay them a visit in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately, I'm doing ED on a MY09 135i in late Sep/ early Oct, so I won't have it back here until probably mid/late December. That's why I suggested anyone else who lives in SoCal and already has his 135i and wants to get things moving on this, just give Porterfield a call and arrange a visit down to their shop in Costa Mesa... |

I heard those porterfield pads are hard as rock, no dust sure but you'll get sparks instead XD. I've seen a couple of pictures of subies with stoptech or Wilwood brakes have a ring of sparks under heave deceleration. could be different pads, they could've fixed it, in any case just my observations.

But to address your comment on Porterfield pads, they offer 4 different compounds as listed in their 07-08 catalog that I have in front of me, and each with its own characteristics and recommended use application... R4-S pads are the street compound and the ones I've used on my cars for several years (great for street, autocross, light track racing). R4 pads are the racing compound (great for road course racing). R4-E pads are the endurance racing compound (great for enduro club racing events). R4-1 pads are the high friction coefficient racing compound (great for autocross, rallycross, vintage GT racing). I can scan the relevant pages from their catalog and post them up for those who may be interested to read more about this. Just let me know. And just in case any of you may be wondering, no I do not work for them nor am I affiliated with them in any way other than being a satisfied customer/user of their products. |
