Funny smell from armrest cup holder

When the car is left in the sun for a bit and it heats up inside there's a bit of a funky smell. I've narrowed it down a bit and it seems to come from inside the center armrest. My guess is that something spilled and went down through the air vents. Any suggestions? Is it straightforward to pull this out and clean out whatever liquid spilled?
