OT : NASA lands rover on Mars...
Wonder if it was a Defender, Discovery or Rangie?
Seriously... a good day for humanity and technology IMHO.

Amazing! I watched it all happening on my laptop via the links on the NASA site. Saw all the real time (well delayed by the 14 mins it takes for the signal to get back to Earth) data including; approach speed, deceleration rate, distance to ground, when the chute was deployed etc and got to watch the nervous->overjoyed faces of all the crew in the control room. What a huge engineering achievement.

I wish it was a manned mission, but you can't fault the trips that are paving the way.
Hopefully the find distinctive proof of microbes with this rover - it might spearhead the want to actually go there and set up a colony |

Jeez - Nearly bought a Laser back in the 80's. Bought a Magna instead
It's great to see Slingsby take gold.... just a few more. At least if we beat South Africa and New Zealand, I'll be happy!

As an analytical chemist, I think it worthwhile noting that Curiosity is really a big mobile chemistry laboratory, doing all sorts of cool chemical analyses. I especially like the laser spectrometer. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the results. However, I am just awestruck at the complexity and sheer success of the mission in just getting it there in one piece.
I'm a great admirer of the USA, and although a number of other nations contributed, this really is a triumph of US science and technology. |

Does anyone find it curious that they could land a man on the moon and come back safely back when the biggest computers they had were less powerful than our phones today... yet only now can go unmanned to Mars?

So how will the likes of George Pell and other religious types respond to the discovery of life on Mars? Or shouldn't I start this in a motoring forum?
I thought it was amusing if not very surprising to hear Cardinal George on Q & A proclaim that dog's souls go to heaven. If that's the case then why be a catholic? I am unaware of any dogs having been baptised! |

I think you're underestimating the magnitude of gap between the challenge of landing on the Moon and Mars.
